GETTING KIDS ACTIVE
What is Nippers?
Nippers is an Australian junior development program for children aged 5 to 14, held at Surf Life Saving Clubs to teach water safety, surf awareness, and rescue skills in a fun environment. Running from October to March, it involves beach activities like swimming, board paddling, and sprinting.
Purpose: To educate children about surf safety, confidence, and to foster future lifesavers.
Activities: Includes beach sprints, relays, flag races, wading, swimming and board paddling.
Age Groups: Children aged 5 to under 13 (U6 - U14), with age determined as of September 30th.
Skills Learned: Basic CPR, first aid, and an understanding of ocean conditions like rips and waves.
Requirements: A preliminary skills assessment (swimming and floating) is required.
Competition: While focusing on education, Nippers also provides opportunities to compete in surf sports at club and regional carnivals.
KEY DETAILS
Welcome to Nippers at North Burleigh
When: Every Sunday from October to March at 8:15am sharp. Our current season calendar is available here.
Where: The Northern end of the North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club. The children are called into their age groups, some information as to plans for the day are given and the age managers move their groups to the relevant area to begin their junior activity programs.
What to bring: Nippers wear North Burleigh swimwear, cap, and most importantly, are slathered with sunscreen. Parents are encouraged to move with their children.

If your child has never been part of a surf club before, a parent or guardian must also join as a member.
